Duchovny says another X-Files movie is on the way

Are people still clamoring for a third X-files movie? Apparently somebody at Fox thinks so, because David Duchovny confirmed that a script for the threequel is already underway. He tells TVmag.com...

Duchovny: "It is in the process of being written. One awaits just the green light from Fox, who are a little disappointed from the relatively poor reception of the second film. The error comes, in my opinion, from the authors straying too far from the roots of the series. Moreover, the film was released in the summer. The third will be much closer to what the public expects, with government conspiracies, etc."

I can certainy agree with him on the previous flick straying a bit from the X-files script. All that religious mumbo jumbo is not what I want to see Mulder and Scully investigating. And not that there's anything truly wrong with it but I never felt like Xzibit or Amanda Peet fit in. Their presence was a distraction.

Show creator, Chris Carter, has previously stated that he wants the next installment of the series to tie in more directly with the show continuity. Specifically it would focus on the proposed alien invasion and colonization of earth, meant to take place on December 22nd, 2012.  Is it possible the next X-files flick could drop on that day? Unlikely since that's a Saturday, but you never know.

The folks at Fox are said to be reluctant to proceed ahead, which makes sense considering how poorly The X-Files: I Want to Believe performed.  But it did make a profit, reeling in close to $70M worldwide. That's still a hefty dropoff from 1998's X-Files flick, which took in $190M.

I loved X-files for the first few years, but missed it two weeks in a row, came back and saw Annabeth Gish and I turned my back on it forever. The first film was genuinely good, creepy fun. The sequel...well, it was just a mess. It would've been fine for anything other than X-files.

What worries me is that Duchovny complains about the writers, but the writers(and director) of the last film included showrunner Chris Carter. If he can't figure out what makes X-files tick, who can?
