I've made no bones about my hope that the proposed remake of the amazing Korean revenge thriller, Oldboy, would die a quick and painless death. Even with Steven Spielberg and Will Smith running things(with Smith to star), I just don't see it as a film that is suited to American mainstreaming. I got my wish last November when it was reported that production had ceased due to licensing issues with the Oldboy manga rights holders. I really didn't care who killed it as long as it was good and dead.
But it appears I might've popped the champagne a little early, as Pajiba is reporting that screenwriter Mark Protosevich is set to turn in a brand new script, which Mandate Pictures has a lot of faith in. If they like it, an offer to direct will be sent out to Spielberg, Matthew Vaughn, and then Danny Boyle as the third option. Seriously? Danny Boyle as the fall back plan? Wow that's ambitious.
Now all of this is contingent on Mandate digging the new draft, but the fact that they commissioned one to begin with means somebody wants this flick made bad.
