I quite enjoyed
Silent Hill when it came out back in 2006. Having no familiarity with the video game, I thought that director Christoph Gans did an admirable job of creating a dreary, menacing atmosphere. Small towns are scary enough if you ask me, but throw in a few demonic creatures and crazed cults and I'm all in. The nurse still gives me nightmares. Plus I'm a huge fan of Radha Mitchell and appreciate any chance there is to see her as the lead. Silent Hill didn't exactly set the world on fire, though. It managed to squeak out about $98M globally, which left the idea of a sequel somewhat in limbo.
Or so you'd think. A sequel was actually commissioned by Sony Pictures four years ago, and a script has been hammered out slowly over that time. Roger Avary(
Pulp Fiction
) was supposed to be returning to pen the draft, but dropped out when it was confirmed that Gans wouldn't be coming back to direct. Then Avary signed back on last year. Now the script has been finalized and a director is in place: Michael Bassett, writer/director of the action fantasy flick
Solomon Kane
. It's assumed that Bassett will also be writing a new version of the script as well.
The sequel will be titled
Silent Hill: Revelations, and will be shot natively in 3D(thank goodness), and sounds as if it will be taking plot elements from the Silent Hill 3 video game, which means no more Radha Mitchell. >sniff< Check out the plot synopsis below.
The sequel follows Heather Mason, along with her father, who have been on the run – always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t full understand, Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by horrific nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.
