The Sunday Drive: 11/7/10

3. Megamind
Megamind takes a lot of it's cues from this summer's Despicable Me, telling the tale of an evil but strangely cuddly supervillain who turns over a new leaf when a greater threat presents itself. Featuring the voice  talents of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, and a hilarious Brad Pitt as Metro Man the grinning Superman knockoff, Megamind is a pleasant diversion if you're looking for some superhero hijinks.
2. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest
Lisbeth Salander's quest for vengeance against the men who ruined her life finally reaches a stunning, satisfying conclusion in this final chapter adapting Stieg Larsson's globally acclaimed Millennium Trilogy!
1. Fair Game
Perhaps no director in recent years has explored the murky nature of the spy game more thoroughly than Doug Liman(The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith). In Fair Game, he ditches the fiction and penetrates straight to the heart of one of this country's most embarassing chapters. Naomi Watts stars as undercover CIA agent, Valerie Plame, who saw her career destroyed and her marriage ruined at the hands of corrupt Bush administration officials seeking payback against her husband. A taut political thriller that will remind you of the personal costs of political expediency.

DVD Pick of the Week: Kisses
Kisses didn't actually come out this week, but this might be my one chance to write about it. Kisses is one of those unexpected, beautiful movies that comes your way once in a blue moon. In a lot of ways it reminds me the great Irish musical, Once, or Jim Sheridan's In America. A pair of poor, Dublin ragamuffin kids: the quiet, simmering Dylan(Shane Curry) and the feistry, expressive Kylie(Kelly O'Neill) run away from their disastrous family lives and spend a life changing night out on the town. Fraught with danger around every corner, the two must find a way to trust and rely on eachother to get through the darkest times. From the moment Kisses sheds it's flat, gray tone and slowly takes on a more colorful shade, this is a magical experience that I personally won't be forgetting any time soon.
