1. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt. 1- $125M
You knew it was going to be huge when an estimated $24M was conjured up at midnight screenings early Friday. The first half of the final chapter in the Harry Potter saga would go on to make over $60M on Friday alone, roughly half the weekend total. This counts as the biggest opening ever for the franchise, and the sixth biggest opening ever.
2. Megamind- $16.2M/$109M
As expected, Megamind took a pounding opposite the similarly targeted Harry Potter. However it's still holding on to an impressive audience each week, only dropping 45%.
3. Unstoppable- $13.1M/$42M
Train enthusiasts continue to flock to Tony Scott and Denzel Washington's railway thriller.
4. Due Date- $9.15M/$72.7M
5. The Next Three Days- $6.75M
Man, Russell Crowe can't buy a hit. This makes two straight duds for the superstar actor. Three if you want to count State of Play, which debuted at almost double this flick. A mistake was made in opening this opposite Harry Potter. Bad call, Ripley.
6. Morning Glory- $5.23M/$19.9M
7. Skyline- $3.43M/$17.6M
Yikes! A 71% tumble! That's all word of mouth, baby, which has been awful.
8. Red- $2.47M/$83.6M
9. For Colored Girls- $2.4M/$34.5M
10. Fair Game- $1.47M/$3.74M
The latest political thriller from Doug Liman, Fair Game increased it's theater count by over 200(still only at 386 total) and subsequently saw a 44% jump in attendance. Here's hoping that with the Oscar season right around the corner this movie gets some added attention down the road.
