has taken over the scripting chores for the adaptation of his latest novel, The Lost Symbol
. To the best of my knowledge this is the first time Brown has tried his hand at screenwriting. Steven Knight(Eastern Promises
) had been hired by Columbia Pictures to pen the script, but apparently they didn't like his take on it. As it stands right now, none of the key players from the last two movies are set in stone to return. Ron Howard, who directed both previous films, has yet to commit. Tom Hanks, who plays Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, is not locked to return either. They can't proceed without Hanks, who is the face of the franchise. Even though both movies have earned over $1.2B worldwide, they've both been met with lukewarm critical response, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Howard move on to other projects.
