The casting search to for the most coveted female role in Hollywood appears to be over as Variety reports Jennifer Lawrence(Winter's Bone) is close to getting an offer from Lionsgate for The Hunger Games. She'll be playing the Katniss Everdeen, who takes her sister's place in a brutal competition against other children for a chance to help her starving community.
Lawrence had been in competition with virtually every other young actress for the role, with her primary rivals being fellow Oscar nominees Hailee Steinfeld(True Grit) and Abigail Breslin(Little Miss Sunshine). The determining factor appears to have been age, with director Gary Ross choosing to present the role as slightly older. Katniss is roughly 16 in the book. Lawrence is 20 years old.
This opens up the door for Lionsgate to cast the inexplicably coveted Alex Pettyfer(Beastly)in the other lead role of Peeta Mellark, Katniss' love interest.
The Hunger Games is based on the first book in Suzanne Collins' popular trilogy.
