3. Battle: Los Angeles
My favorite element of Jonathan Liebesman's alien invasion flick is the scope. While it focuses primarily on one small, inexperienced unit led by a grizzled and battle-tested Aaron Eckhart, it's just a small piece in a global war against an unknown enemy. Take note, though. The film is called BATTLE: Los Angeles. This is a 100% war scenario, so expect cliche characters, rah-rah speeches, and a heavy focus on action over substance.
2. Rango
You kinda knew after True Grit that we'd see an influx of old school Westerns, but who would've thought the next and possibly best would star an animated lizard voiced by Johnny Depp? Besides the cast of quirky animal characters gunslingin' vigilantes, it's the photo realistic animation by Industrial Lights & Magic that is the real showstopper. Could Rango be the Pixar-killer for 2011?
1. The Adjustment Bureau
Matt Damon is the most believable actor in Hollywood. Years ago would any of us have believed the guy from All the Pretty Horses could also be the baddest hitman on the planet? In The Adjustment Bureau he gets to tackle the most unique film in his career as a politician battling the hands of fate in order to be with the woman he loves. From the incredible mind of novelist Philip K. Dick.
DVD Pick of the Week: Morning Glory
The impeccable comedic savvy of Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton is met with the undeniable charm of Rachel McAdams in this witty comedy from the writer of The Devil Wears Prada. McAdams is a fresh faced, ambitious producer on the worst morning news show in town. Her hail mary pass to rating success? Reaching out to a popular, straight news guy who wants nothing to do with the type of fluff she wants to peddle. The resulting debate between information and entertainment turns into one hilarious test of wills.
