Eisenberg, Page join Woody Allen's upcoming film
Woody Allen has done a pretty darn good job keeping the details of his upcoming film under wraps. At this point in his career it's his name that sells his movies, anyway. What we know is extremely limited. It will be shot in Rome likely this summer, and that Alec Baldwin and Penelope Cruz are the first two major stars attached. Now we know the rest of the principle cast, which skews quite a bit younger.
Variety is reporting that Jesse Eisenberg and Ellen Page have now also signed on, although their roles remain unclear just like the rest of the film. Eisenberg is coming off a fantastic 2010 in which he was nominated for an Oscar for The Social Network, as well as receiving some acclaim for playing a drug dealer in Holy Rollers. He'll next be heard voicing the title character in the animated film, Rio. Page is currently starring as a crazed superhero vigilante opposite Rainn Wilson in Super.
Eisenberg had been rumored ever since the Baldwin news broke, and I said then that he makes for a perfect Woody Allen stand-in. Then again I felt the same way about Jason Biggs when he starred in Allen's awful 2003 rom-com, Anything Else. So maybe I don't have the best nose for these things. I'm going to assume we'll be following two couples, one older one younger, as they experience the beauty and romance of Rome. I could be wrong about that, too.
