Just when Seth Gordon thought he was out of the world of video games, MGM pulls him back in. The guy who masterminded the entertaining documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, has been tapped direct a remake of 1983's computer takeover flick, WarGames.
This all falls in line with MGM's recent initiative to get remakes of their most recognizable films onto the big screen in a hurry. They've gotten the ball rolling already with Robocop, Carrie, and Poltergeist with more on the way(Mr. Mom?? Say it ain't so!!). But unlike those films, WarGames provides a unique challenge.
Deadline says that Gordon will pretty much have free run in coming up with a fresh take on the original story, which had a couple of computer geeks accidentally getting into a military computer program and nearly launching us into WWIII by thinking they're playing a video game. In today's day and age, that scenario simply won't fly as hacking isn't really a big deal anymore. At least it's not as secretive and mysterious as it once was. They'll need to incorporate some Wikileaks style angle to the plot to make it work. Whether Gordon will have any hand in crafting the script is unknown.
Gordon's latest film, Horrible Bosses, is due out on July 8th.
