1. Cars 2- $68M
Opening in over 4000 theaters, Pixar continues their winning ways with Cars 2. Although it's fair to recognize that the $68M opening isn't that much improved from the 2006 original($60M), and signals a downward slide from Toy Story 3
2. Bad Teacher- $31M
Could this be the year of the R-rated comedy? Bad Teacher follows in the footsteps of two other wildly successful raunchy, adult laughers and opens with a debut that far exceeds the tiny $19M budget. While the film's success is another notch in the belt for Cameron Diaz, I think the supporting cast of Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel was as much of a drawing force.
3. Green Lantern
Yikes! Did somebody turn all the currency in the world yellow? That would explain why Green Lantern suffered a crushing 65% drop from last week, pretty much guaranteeing it'll be the lowest grossing superhero movie of the summer. So far the response internationally has been lukewarm, so whether or not Green Lantern recoups it's $300M budget is anybody's guess.
4. Super 8
5. Mr. Popper's Penguins
So I guess all the kiddies haven't had their fill of the ice cold birdies yet, as Jim Carrey's latest held steady only slipping 44% from last week. Still nothing compared to Carrey's other starring bids, but not a total disaster.
6. X-men: First Class
Still the lowest grossing X-men movie, but arguably has the strongest word of mouth. Does that mean we'll get X-men: First Class 2? I hope so.
7. The Hangover Part II
8. Bridesmaids
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
10. Midnight in Paris
