Y'know it's been eleven years since the first Scary Movie? God I'm old, and so are you. The mediocre franchise was dreamed up by those "funny" guys from the house of Wayans, with the entire plan to spoof horror movies like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Grudge. Ingenious. The comedic well ran dry pretty quickly, but that didn't stop them from making three more flicks, and even spinning off into other genres like Epic Movie and Date Movie. The Wayans' were smart enough to drop out after Scary Movie 2. The last film came out back in 2006, a long time in Hollywood circles, leading most to believe somebody had finally found a way to kill off their version of the ghost face for good. Think again. Did you think The Weinstein Company would let their $800M dollar baby go down so easily?
Miramax has released a bunch of new release dates for the upcoming year, and the most prominent of that bunch is Scary Movie 5, which is set to open on April 20th 2012. 4/20? I can smell a Cheech Marin cameo coming already. No word on who's writing it or who will star. I can't believe Anna Faris would return, but y'never know.
According to Gordon and the Whale, the plan is for this to be a reboot of the franchise, which sounds like a moronic idea for a satire. I don't think anybody is invested in the plot structure or the Scary Movie canon.
