I'd like to think that New Line has had a change of heart ever since the
news broke over the weekend that the stars had aligned for them and Mike Myers to bring back 1960s spy spoof,
Austin Powers
. But it sounds as if they haven't so much had a change of heart as they are confused the news broke at all. Whatever the case may be, it sounds as if the report is a little bit premature, at least according to
Deadline.
So the story goes that Myers and New Line had a deal
about three years ago to crank out a fourth Austin Powers film. Even though
Goldmember
was critically hammered, it still made about $300M. Co-written by series scribe McCullers, the fourth film would be a personal story dealing in some unclear way with Myers' relationship with his father. Ugh. Does that mean more Scotty Evil/Dr. Evil shenanigans? But after
The Love Guru
stunk up the box office, Myers went AWOL. The story never got written, no deal struck.
Six months ago New Line made the struggling actor a new, less lucrative deal with a small upfront payday. They heard nothing back from Myers or his reps until last week when they suddenly showed some interest. So they don't know what the heck's going on.
Personally, I'd rather the whole thing fall through, but I wouldn't be totally against a relaunch of the character with somebody other than Myers. Or maybe have the original Powers pass the torch to somebody younger, but have Myers continue to play the Dr. Evil role. I just don't think the original concept will fly anymore.
