When you're Justin Lin and your last film,
Fast Five
, earned over $600M, you can do pretty much whatever you want. Injecting a franchise like that with no life tends to get a studio's attention, and Lin has seen his name attached to a number of huge tentpole projects recently. So in the last few days there's been a swirl of information surrounding the director, and what's next on his plate. Hard to believe this is the same guy who gave us the great coming-of-age film,
Better Luck Tomorrow
. Seems like so long ago.
Lin's success with the Fast and the Furious flicks has pretty much given him a permanent home over at Universal, and it's clear they want him as their guy for their most lucrative properties. Back in April, Universal snatched up the rights to
The Terminator
franchise, which had been rumored to have Lin attached as director. That was then confirmed, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, now free from destroying California, set to come back as the robotic T-800. While talking to our friends over a
ThePlaylist, Lin confirmed that he'd met with Schwarzenegger about the film, as well as James Cameron. Cameron won't be involved, but was just lending some friendly advice, I guess. I hope he picked up the lunch check.
Way back in 2009, Lin also saw himself attached to a big screen remake of
Highlander
, which Summit Entertainment was hoping to get off the ground as a potential new franchise for when Twilight wraps up. The latest news on it was that
Twilight
scribe Melissa Rosenberg was writing the latest draft of the script, which deals with a race of immortal humans who fight and kill eachother because "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!" Ahem, sorry. Lin is in a much better position to be picky than he was two years ago, and able to choose films which give him the most creative freedom. That was likely part of the reason why he's made the
decision to drop out of directing Highlander, in order to focus on a 6th Fast and the Furious film, which he confirms will be his next project. That means Summit is in the running for a new captain to steer the Highlander ship.
Universal has already mapped out a May 24th 2013 release date for the Fast Five follow-up, which sees Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, The Rock, and the rest of the gang moving deeper into heist territory.
