Anthony Hopkins signs on to serial killer flick, Solace

The day ofthe serial killer movie is pretty much over, and we kinda have Anthony Hopkins to thank for it. Following his act as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs has proven to be impossible, with no other depraved killer catching the public's attention the way he did in that classic film. Heck, not even Hopkins could top Hopkin in the battle of Lecter superiority. The days of movies like Seven and Kiss the Girls being blockbusters is essentially over, with the last successful one being David Fincher's Zodiac, which I think is admired more by critics than it was liked by the general public.

That's not going to stop Hopkins from taking another stab at the genre, only this one with a supernatural twist. Variety reports he's set to star in Solace, which sees him as a doctor with psychic abilities on the trailer of a unique serial killer. Peter Morgan(The Queen, Frost/Nixon) wrote the latest draft of the script, so at least it's got some muscle behind it in that regard, although no director has been attached yet. James Vanderbilt, who wrote Fincher's Zodiac film, took a stab at the script as well.

It's been a mixed bag year for Hopkins so far. I thought he was excellent in Thor as Odin, but sucked royally in the pointless exorcism flick, The Rite. He'll be seen next in one of my most anticipated films of the next few months, Fernando Meireilles' romance thriller, 360.
