Dwayne Johnson to instruct you in The Monster Hunter's Survival Guide
A few things that are becoming more and more popular in Hollywood right now are set to converge in one potentially awesome flick. 1. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, the on again/off again WWE Superstar(he'll be wrestling in tonight's Survivor Series PPV and at WrestleMania), who has been snatching roles left and right recently, landing the starring gig in Ric Roman Waugh's crime drama, Snitch, and currently filming GI Joe: Retaliation. 2. Monster movies are taking over fairy tales for the new hot genre, mostly thanks to Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim. And 3. Instructional books being adapted into theatrical features, such as What to Do When You're Expecting. All will come together in a big screen version of John Paul Russ' comic, The Monster Hunter's Survival Guide.
Deadline reports that Johnson will star in the film, which is basically a comprehensive tutorial on hunting a variety of creatures, alive, undead, and magical. Produced by Simon Kinberg(Sherlock Holmes), the film is pretty early on as it doesn't have a writer or director attached, so don't expect to see it for a couple of years maybe. Still, it continues a satisfying trend that has seen Johnson going back to his action star roots and further away from the family genre films that may have made him a lot of money, but took him away from what made him popular to begin with. It's no coincidence that he's been more in demand lately after movies like Faster and Fast Five than ever in his career.
Johnson will be seen next in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which opens next February. By the way, if there's any doubt that Johnson's jumping into acting has hurt his standing with pro wrestling fans, tonight's Survivor Series PPV sold out in less than 90 minutes, while the upcoming WrestleMania broke WWE sales records for his match against John Cena.
