Martin Scorsese confirmed to direct The Snowman
Well it's been a fun, but brief diversion for Martin Scorsese. The last couple of years have seen him getting away from his typical gritty, street level crime stories and making films that nobody would have expected from the veteran filmmaker. Last year it was his loopy psycho thriller, Shutter Island. This week sees the release of Hugo, Scrosese's first foray into 3D family adventure films. That's all over now, as he's been confirmed to direct The Snowman, based on the best selling crime novel by Jo Nesbo.
Scorsese was first mentioned as circling the project last month, but final approval had to be granted by Nesbo, who has now given his thumbs up. This'll be the first English language adaptation of Nesbo's Norwegian thrillers, centered on his hard nosed detective, Harry Hole. The story centers on a serial killer known as The Snowman, who abducts and kills women on the day of the first snowfall.
With David Fincher adapting The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Matt Reeves adapting Let the Right One In, and now this, remaking Norwegian thrillers is becoming a trend. How come nobody foreign ever takes one of our original works and remakes it for their audience? Or am I just missing something? Is there a Swedish remake of Goodfellas floating around that I'm not aware of? [THR]
