So last week the Sundance Film Festival had one of its super secret screenings again, and you may recall that last year I got an invite to it and the movie turned out to be Nymphomaniac. Well this year it ended up being The Wachowskis' Jupiter Ascending, and if that seemed like an odd fit for the indie festival then you're completely right. So I was not upset when I didn't get invited to this one. Reviews were embargoed, anyway, yet the word on the street was not at all positive. Is the oft-delayed film as bad as the troubled production would suggest? Check out five new clips and judge for yourself.
Starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, and Oscar-nominee Eddie Redmayne (think he regrets this one?), the film does seem to present a sprawling, unique sci-fi world taking us into the furthest reaches of space. But given the track record of the Wachowskis lately it's tough to have any confidence. Here's the official synopsis:
"From the streets of Chicago to the far-flung galaxies whirling through space, “Jupiter Ascending” tells the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), who was born under a night sky, with signs predicting she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.”
Jupiter Ascending opens February 6th.
