Director Patty Jenkins leaves Thor 2
Hey, Marvel deserves some credit for going as far as they did with Patty Jenkins as director of Thor 2. It was never a union that made much sense for any number of reasons. She's a solid filmmaker who made Monster, a decent film with one amazing performance by Charlize Theron, but Jenkins hasn't done squat in over eight years. You could also say that her style doesn't jibe with that of the Marvel superhero world, but it worked with Kenneth Branagh, so I understand why they wanted to go in a similar direction. It's pretty much all for naught, though, as Deadline reports Jenkins has totally exited the picture.
That ol' "creative differences" chestnut was given as the reason why she left, but apparently on good terms. The possibility exists she'll take on another superhero flick for the company, but if so it won't be on a pressure packed sequel. I wouldn't be surprised if she turned up directing a Black Widow spinoff with star Scarlett Johansson. Seems like a perfect fit. Brian Kirk preceded Jenkins on the job, but he left shortly after he was hired.
Marvel is already on the prowl for a replacement, which I'm assuming will be one that the fanboys can get behind. The only directors who fit that requirement are all busy: David Goyer, Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon, Matthew Vaughn, Bryan Singer, and JJ Abrams. I'm thinking Marvel goes outside the box for their pick, like maybe....Tarsem Singh?
