Abbie Cornish is on fire right now. We can argue all day about the merits of Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch, but it was just part of what has been her busiest year yet. It began with her co-starring opposite Bradley Cooper in the surprise hit, Limitless, and has continued through the filming of Madonna's next directorial effort, W.E. Next on her list appears to be Seven Psychopaths, Martin McDonagh's long awaited follow-up to In Bruges.
Sounds crazy enough to make even Sucker Punch tame by comparison, the screwball crime flick revolves around a struggling screenwriter who gets pulled into a dognapping plot hatched by his two friends. They steal the beloved Shih Tzu of a violent gangster, who goes off in search of the pooch. The cast is what sets this one apart, as Colin Farrell will play the writer, with Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken as his two scheming buds. Woody Harrelson is the dog loving criminal, with Cornish playing the girlfriend of Farrell's character. Olga Kurylenko and Tom Waits round out the principle cast, which once had Mickey Rourke in the role taken by Harrelson. Rourke left in a huff, calling McDonagh a "jerkoff" in the process. Temper temper.
It's amazing how far Cornish has come since she first left me slack jawed with her performance in the intense indie drama, Somersault. That was back in 2004, and I remember walking into the film completely unaware of what it was about or who was in it. Sam Worthington was in it, as well, but he paled in comparison to Cornish. We've never seen her do comedy on this kind of level, though, so it'll be interesting to see how that pans out.
Seven Psychopaths could be looking at a release late in 2012.
