Trailer Time: John Carter, starring Taylor Kitsch
Earlier today we saw the Good Morning America version of the new trailer for sci-fi/romance John Carter. Well now IGN has unveiled the full online form, without Robin Roberts and a gaggle of screaming street walkers in the background.
Actually I saw this trailer earlier tonight at a screening of War Horse, and I said the same thing then that I said just two days ago, and that's Disney has spent a lot of money to make a movie that looks all too familiar. The Barsoom novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs are great works of high adventure, and the trailer seems to be playing up that aspect better than the unfocused teaser from a few months ago. But still, the bland desert landscape isn't very appealing, and the creatures don't seem all that unique.
It's going to fall on Taylor Kitsch to really carry this thing, in what Disney hopes will be his breakout performance. He's been skirting on the edges of stardom for awhile, after spending years on the Friday Night Lights TV series. He'll have a lot of help, with Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Bryan Cranston, and Mark Strong making up some of the supporting cast. But if John Carter is going to work it's going to be because Kitsch made it work. He'll be starring in Battleship next year, so you can bet people are watching to see how John Carter performs. Andrew Stanton(Wall-E) directed, making his first jump into live-action features.
We'll see how things shake out when it hits theaters on March 9th. For now, check out the new trailer...
