Trailer Time: 'The Moth Diaries', directed by Mary Harron

This past year has seen a number of long dormant directors making big come back. Whit Stillman, Lynne Ramsay, and Alexander Payne just to name a few. Another that looks to be making a big return is Mary Harron, who burst out of the gate with I Shot Andy Warhol, followed up a few years later with the classic American Psycho. It's been seven years since her last film, The Notorious Bettie Page, which featured a fantastic performance by Gretchen Mol as the pin up icon.

Two things have been resonant in all of Harron's work so far: controversy and obsession. She always pushes boundaries in her work, which tends to be about characters who have a dangerously single minded focus.  The same appears to be the case with The Moth Diaries, based on the novel by Rachel Klein.

Sarah Bolger(In America) plays Rebecca, a girl enrolled at an elite boarding school, who begins an intense friendship with the popular Lucy, played by Sarah Gadon(Dream House). Their relationship is destroyed with the arrival of the mysterious Ernessa, played by Lily Cole(Rage). As Lucy and Ernessa become consumed with one another, Rebecca begins to suspect that Ernessa may be responsible for a number of suspicious deaths on campus. Scott Speedman(Underworld) co-stars as an English professor Rebecca develops a crush on.

Unfortunately, the latest trailer makes this look like The Vampire Diaries meets Cruel Intentions.  The film hits Itunes and VOD on March 20th, or you can wait a month to see it on the big screen....
