I'm not a big fan of viral marketing, but this is too cool to be ignored. Earlier we learned from Ridley Scott himself that Guy Pearce would be playing Peter Weyland in Prometheus, one of the corporate guys who runs the mysterious Company that is the driving force behind Alien and Aliens. In an emphatic confirmation of the role through some ingenious marketing, TED Talk has unveiled a speech from Pearce as Weyland, from the year 2023.
It's actually very cool listening to the charismatic and slightly arrogant Weyland talk about what the company has in store, in the process revealing some hints as to what Prometheus will be all about. And if you never read up on your Greek mythology, Weyland also reveals the origin the Prometheus name. Basically, Weyland is justifying the company's future, questionable actions, by comparing them to some of the great achievements in human history, and making a rather bold statement about humanity's place in the universe. It's really a rather haunting piece, conceived by writer Damon Lindelof and directed by Luke Scott. Too bad it won't be a part of the film itself, but it serves as one hell of a primer.
