Daniel Espinosa in talks to direct WWII crime flick, 'The Outsider'; Michael Fassbender to star?
No other director has more buzz right now than Daniel Espinosa. The Swedish born filmmaker rose to fame with Snabba Cash, his acclaimed crime film which has been a boon not only for him but it's star, Joel Kinnaman. While the film is finally making it's way to America later this year, Espinosa took that time to build his name with the $100M grossing Safe House. Not too shabby.
Rather than slowing down, Espinosa is moving full speed ahead on what may be his next project. Variety reports that Warner Brothers wants him to direct The Outsider, based on a Black List script by Andrew Baldwin. The heavily pursued Michael Fassbender is being eyed for the lead role, an American WWII POW who goes to work for the Japanese yakuza crime syndicate.
Whether Fassbender can even fit the film into his schedule is unclear, as he's got a ton on his plate right now. He recently hopped aboard Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy's The Counselor, which shoots in just a couple of months, and there's been talk of him playing the Irish warrior Cu Chulainn in Irish Myths. At some point he'll shoot the promising adaptation of Twelve Years a Slave, re-teaming him with director Steve McQueen(Shame), and starring Brad Pitt and Chiwetel Ejiafor. Nothing better get in the way of that one!
