Dwayne Johnson heads to Paraguay for 'Ciudad'

With Journey 2: The Mysterious Island having already surpassed the box office haul of the first film to the tune of $247M, Dwayne Johnson can say he's had a pretty successful 2012. That's before he suits up for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which looks like a surefire hit, and he's also got the promising true life flick, Snitch, due out as well. While he still has many detractors considering his start as a WWE superstar, Johnson has worked hard over the last decade to become a legitimate star, and the man studios call to pump life into stagnant franchises.

Along with that, Johnson has put his name to a wide array of projects that can only make him better as an actor. Not only will he be a part of Michael Bay's bodybuilder crime flick, Pain and Gain, but he'll play Hercules in an upcoming film, not to mention the follow-up to Fast Five. Now you can add one more to his ever growing slate, as Johnson is set to star in Ciudad, based on an upcoming graphic novel from the Russo Brothers.

The Russo Brothers are probably best known for the unfunny Owen Wilson comedy, You Me and Dupree, and since then they've been working mostly in television. First announced some years ago, Ciudad takes place in the dangerous and corrupt city of Ciudad del Este, with Johnson playing a mercenary hired to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a Brazilian drug lord. The script is by Joe Russo, who will tag team the directing chores with his brother, Anthony.

This sounds as if it may be in the same, gritty style as Faster, which had Johnson as a violent force of nature the likes of which he's never been on screen. Considering the long wait for the comic, there's no clear idea of when production could start, but it's not as if Johnson doesn't have enough to stay busy.  [Comingsoon]
