Edgar Ramirez will star in Richard Kelly's 'Corpus Christi', produced by Eli Roth and Robert Rodriguez
Maybe it took some time, but finally I think people are starting to see who Richard Kelly really is as a film maker. Far too many people think they saw some potential in him after Donnie Darko, although most of those folks couldn't begin to tell you what the film was about(nor could Kelly for that matter). That's fine. The film looked good, I guess. Then he followed that up with the equally incomprehensible Southland Tales, still one of the most hilariously awful moviegoing experiences I've ever had. Fortunately for him, nobody saw it so they couldn't be properly disappointed by it, although those same folks did turn out for The Box three years later and...well, the results weren't pretty.
Since then Kelly has been trying to get another mind screw of a film out of the gate, with little results. Titled Corpus Christi, the film would take place just a few years in the future, and follow an Iraq War veteran suffering from post traumatic stress disorder in Corpus Christi, Texas. First announced more than a year ago, Kelly appears to have finally found some funding as he'll team up with producers Robert Rodriguez and Eli Roth to get the film off the ground.
That's definitely a reason for optimism, but even better is the news that Edgar Ramirez(Wrath of the Titans, Carlos) will take the lead role. Variety reports the film will take a more narrative approach than Kelly's other work, but I have my doubts as the premise seems to lend itself to his typically confusing style. Filming is set to begin in July. [Variety]
