Emmy Rossum the latest to join the cast of 'Beautiful Creatures'
I've been a huge fan of Emmy Rossum's for a long time, after her career got off to a blistering start with a heartfelt breakthrough performance in Songcatcher. 2004 proved to be the biggest year of her career, starring in the blockbuster atrocity The Day After Tomorrow, but making up for it that same year with The Phantom of the Opera, for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. Ever since it's been slow going on the film front, and 2009's Dragonball: Evolution proved to be a low point. Yep, even lower than Poseidon. Now that she's made a career comeback as part of the Showtime series, Shameless, she's looking to bounce back on the silver screen as well.
Rossum will join the rapidly developing adaptation of Beautiful Creatures, based on the first book in Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's fantasy novels. Adapted and directed by Richard LaGravensese, the southern set story follows Lena Duchaness, a young girl with mysterious powers she hopes to keep hidden from the townsfolk. This is made more difficult by her family's curse, and the strange relationship she has with Ethan Wate, a boy who thinks her the woman literally of his dreams. Jack O'Connell and Alice Englert are taking on the two leads, with Viola Davis and Emma Thompson starring as well. Rossum will play Ridley, a powerful dark witch and a cousin to Lena.
Filming will begin next month in New Orleans. [Variety]
