Tom Cruise to star in 'A Star is Born' opposite Beyonce?

Who knew Tom Cruise was such a strong crooner? There hasn't been a heck of a lot of opportunity to see it on the big screen, but the small fry A-lister has been known to bust out a tune while hangin' with those crazy Scientologist buddies of his. We'll get a chance to see it in action as part of Adam Shankman's upcoming big hair musical, Rock of Ages, and if all falls into place as part of Clint Eastwood's long gestating A Star is Born remake.

Deadline reports that Warner Brothers wants Cruise for the lead role, that of a washed up, alcoholic actor who forms a relationship with a showbiz newbie.  Since the story was first told back in 1937, it's been remade two more times, with the 1954 Judy Garland/James Mason version by far the most beloved, although I'm one who doesn't think Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson did so bad in 1976.

Eastwood's film has been in the works for awhile, and would have been in the process of filming right now if its star, Beyonce, hadn't gone and got pregnant. Still, it's clear why the studio would want such a powerhouse crossover pair as Beyonce and Cruise.
