Trailer Time: 'Sparkle', starring Jordin Sparks and Whitney Houston

It's impossible to know how much attention a movie like Sparkle would have received on its own, but undoubtedly the tragic death of co-star Whitney Houston has more eyes on the project than normal. Debuting a few days ago while I was away, the first trailer for the musical remake doesn't change my mind that this is a totally pointless film, but that it also has the star power and buzz to be a surprise hit.

Directed by Salim Akil, who knows a thing or two about sleeper hits after last year's Jumping the Broom, Sparkle is a remake of the 1976 film that told roller coaster story of a Motown group similar to The Supremes. American Idol winner Jordin Sparks leads the cast, with Derek Luke, a serious Mike Epps, Cee-Lo Green, Omari Hardwick, Michael K. Williams, Carmen Ejogo, and Tike Sumpter make up an impressive ensemble. In her final film performance, Houston plays Sparks' mother, a former singer who never lived up to her potential.

I'll be curious to see just how big of a role Houston has, because clearly this is a supporting role even though the trailer gives the appearance of so much more. We'll find out for sure when Sparkle opens on August 10th. Check out the trailer below....
