Could we be looking at the next Borat? Certainly, anything that makes us all forget the horror that was Bruno would be welcome, but whether or not The Dictator is that film remains to be seen. Cohen has done his part to sell the politically incorrect, despot-out-of-water story, by turning up at events dressed as Wadiyan leader, General Abadeen, and spilling ashes all over Ryan Seacrest. Yet The Dictator isn't structured in the same "candid camera", mockumentary style as Borat was. It's a totally scripted, mistaken identity story closer in tone to Coming to America.
What really matters is whether or not the movie is funny. Paramount has released the hilarious opening scene from The Dictator, which introduces us to the fictional nation of Wadiya, and the ridiculous circumstances surrounding his birth. Based loosely on Saddam Hussein's book, Zabibah and the King, the story follows the general as he comes to America to help ensure democracy never reaches his homeland. Ben Kingsley, Anna Faris, Megan Fox, and John C. Reilly co-star. The Dictator opens on May 16th!
