Gary Oldman joins the 'Robocop' remake
I have my issues with Joel Kinnaman(Snabba Cash) playing the role of Robocop. He's a decent enough actor, although to me he never seems quite masculine enough for the part. Shut up, fans of The Killing! I've seen him on that AMC show and stick to my guns on this. Anyway, the upswing is that MGM has a star who they can bank a franchise around, and in two years Kinnaman might be the biggest thing in Hollywood. For now, he's still pretty much an unknown quantity to most folks, which is why Robocop is going to need another big name attached.
THR reports that Gary Oldman is set to play Norton, the scientist who pieces together gravely injured cop, Alex Murphy, into the justice seeking hero. After playing a bunch of baddies for a lot of his career, Oldman has taken a turn for the angels recently, playing Jim Gordon in the Batman movies, and earning an Oscar nomination for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. With Oldman aboard, the Norton role is likely going to be expanded a little bit. This time, Norton "finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation."
Unfortunately, it looks like those stories of Gael Garcia Bernal, Rebecca Hall, Sean Penn, and Edward Norton joining the cast aren't going to pan out. Still, Oldman is a pretty sweet catch. Jose Padilha(Elite Squad) is directing, for an August 9th 2013 release.
