Hey, Madonna got an Academy Award nomination for it, so it can't be all bad, right? Well, that nomination was for Costume Design, and it certainly deserved the recognition. Unfortunately almost everything else goes wrong with her over-stylized interpretation of the controversial, overly romanticized story of American divorcee, Wallis Simpson(Andrea Riseborough), and King Edward VIII(James D'Arcy), who gave up the throne for the woman he loved. The biggest flaw is in deciding to contrast their story with that of a modern day woman(Abbie Cornish) obsessed with their relationship. Riseborough gives an amazing performance, but Cornish looks completely disinterested, probably due to her character being so unlikable.
How can you possibly pass this up? Seven of the director's biggest hits from the Warner Brothers vault, including Batman, Beetlejuice, Mars Attacks, and Pee-Wee's Big Adventure! Plus, it comes with a premium hardcover book which can be a part of your library forever! What is that, like $5 or $6 a Blu-Ray? Too good of a deal to pass up.
Steven Soderbergh has always had a knack for finding undiscovered talent and casting them in films uniquely suited to their strengths. In Haywire, he taps the sexy, physical force that is MMA star Gina Carano in a hard-hitting action film that has her punching the faces in of some of Hollywood's biggest stars. Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, and Michael Fassbender make up an incredible cast, with Carano more than holding her own.
