The Sunday Drive 5/6/12

3. Safe
Kinetic, action packed direction by Boaz Yakin combines with another charismatic, forceful performance by Jason Statham to make for the actor's most satisfying film in years. Statham plays an ex-cop who must protect a child prodigy from the Russian mob, the Chinese Triads, and the corrupt NYPD who all want the information buried deep in her mind.

2. Sound of My Voice
Compelling and wildly unpredictable, Brit Marling has finally crafted a film that lives up to her status as last year's festival darling. Directed by Zal Batmanglij, the story follows two investigative journalists infiltrating a rapidly growing cult in order to debunk its mysterious leader.
1. Marvel's The Avengers
What's there left to say? My review says it all. The Avengers is a "jaw-dropping, powerhouse" film that not only meets our lofty expectations but totally surpasses them. For comic book fans, it's a dream come true. For everyone else, it's just an amazing cinematic experience. Joss Whedon, I salute thee.

DVD Pick of the Week:   Haywire
Steven Soderbergh has always had a knack for finding undiscovered talent and casting them in films uniquely suited to their strengths. In Haywire, he taps the sexy, physical force that is MMA star Gina Carano in a hard-hitting action film that has her punching the faces in of some of Hollywood's biggest stars. Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, and Michael Fassbender make up an incredible cast, with Carano more than holding her own.
