New images from Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby'

So, how many Oscar nominations are we expecting out of Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby? Four? Five? More? Certainly Best Costume Design....ummm...maybe Best Art Direction...and that doesn't even begin to touch the acting nods. With Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Carey Mulligan leading the garish adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel there may not be enough categories to go around. Might need to come up with a few more.

I might be going a bit overboard in my excitement, as there's certainly the chance this could be a gorgeous trainwreck. All of Luhrmann's films have been visual stunners, but the truth is that most haven't really worked. Does that lessen my anticipation for The Great Gatsby? Not on your life. Luhrmann has never had a cast quite like this, nor has he had material nearly as strong or better suited to his skills.

A handful of new images from the film have been released, showing DiCaprio and Maguire hanging out at The Angry Diamond nightclub, which is named after a passage in the novel. Another of these shots shows DiCaprio and Mulligan looking a tad pensive as they dance the night away.

The Great Gatsby is set to open in 3D(!!!!) on Christmas Day.[HeyUGuys]
