What is this, the third trailer for The Watch? Not including the teaser from a few months ago? 20th Century Fox has been pouring it on pretty thick ever since the sci-fi/comedy had to change its name from Neighborhood Watch in the wake of the Trayvon Martin incident, and so far everything we've seen has me thinking this might be the comedy event of the year.
Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and Richard Ayoade(director of Submarine) star as four buddies who form up their own neighborhood watch group, complete with special team jackets, as a way of escaping their boring lives. Turns out the 'hood's biggest threat isn't the occasional burglar or snotty kid, but the discovery of an alien plot to take over the world. The sci-fi elements of the story have been left under wraps for the most part, and in this trailer shows us why. It's basically a small part of the puzzle, and just another thing for this group of funny dudes to crack jokes about. Nothing wrong with that. Also, this trailer does a better job of showing who the guys are as individuals, with Jonah Hill again playing a failed cop much as he did in 21 Jump Street. Vaughn is the crazy guy, as usual, while Ayoade has his own hang-ups. Good to see him getting a chance to hang out with the big boys in what is his first major Hollywood film. If it's the hit that it certainly appears to be, we may be seeing more from Ayoade on our shores, which is a very good thing.
