Trailer Time: '2 Days in New York', starring Julie Delpy and Chris Rock

While the easiest comparisons to Julie Delpy's 2 Days in Paris, and the upcoming sequel, 2 Days in New York, have been to Woody Allen, she seems to be doing her own thing most of the time. Sure, they both include much of Allen's trademark neuroses, crazy situations, and oddball ruminations on love and culture, but Delpy shows a commitment to evolving her lead characters in a way Allen never did. It's one of Delpy's most likable traits, really, one we saw brought to full glory with the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset flicks, and now we see it again in 2 Days in New York.

The trailer for the film has been released, with Delpy again in the role of awkward neurotic, Marion. It's been a few years, and she's not at all in the same place as she was before, now with a child and living stateside with her new boyfriend, Mingus(Chris Rock). While she's still a bit flaky, their relationship is solid and comfortable, until her boisterous father(played by Delpy's real Dad), sister, and her sister's ex-boyfriend all come to town for a visit. The mix of culture clash and communicative differences go from mildly annoying to explosive over the course of two tense days, putting Marion and Mingus's relationship through the wringer.

Delpy, who wrote the script as well as directed, was never really the issue. We knew she'd be solid, and her chemistry with everyone is unmistakable. It was Rock, venturing a little bit out of his comfort zone that was the biggest question mark. He seems to fit right in with her frantic comedic style, perhaps even better than Adam Goldberg in the previous film. 2 Days in New York opens in limited release on August 10, but will be available on Itunes starting July 6th.
