Michael Elliot to write 'Waiting to Exhale' sequel, 'Getting to Happy'
A sequel to Waiting to Exhale has been in the pipeline for awhile, but it hit a seemingly insurmountable roadblock when Whitney Houston passed away last year. While the close-knit cast and crew struggled to cope with the loss, Fox 2000 pushed ahead with plans for a follow-up, and the Internet has been abuzz with possibilities. Some have said Houston's daughter would join the cast; while some reports have said the film would a tribute to the fallen singer. More recently, rumors have been floating around that Oprah Winfrey was being considered to take on Houston's role of Savannah Jackson.
THR reports that Michael Elliot(Just Wright) has been brought on to pen the latest draft for Getting to Happy, the title taken from Terry McMillan's novel sequel. Picking up fifteen years after the last story ended, Getting To Happy revisits Savannah, Robin, Gloria, and Bernadine as their lives are at a midlife crossroads. Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon are all expected to return, although nothing is set in stone. McMillan took a crack at adapting the script herself, before passing it on to Lori Laken Hutherson who kicked it over to Elliot.
I kinda want this project to just go away, as I feel like there's no tasteful way to move ahead without Houston.
