New images from Laurent Cantet's 'Foxfire'

Foxfire burns and burns! I've always had a serious thing for Joyce Carol Oates' feminist novel, Foxfire: Confessions of a Girl Gang, but only because the 1996 film really clicked with me. Directed by Annette Haywood-Carter, it featured a before she was famous Angelina Jolie, the awesome Jenny Lewis, and Hedy Burress as a girl gang who come together and fight against the men who have made their lives Hell.

So while I'd prefer there not be another version, if someone's going to do it, Laurent Cantet is a guy who can bring something new to the table. Cantet won the Palme d'Or back in 2008 for his stirring and revealing schoolroom drama, The Class, and much like that film he's going with a total cast of unknowns for Foxfire. He's also decided to keep the 1950s timeframe rather than opting for a modernization like the previous film, a decision which should add a bit more texture to an already compelling story.

The two newly released photos are ahead of the film's world premier in Toronto. Hopefully we'll hear more about a U.S. run if it performs well enough.
