Seriously, Mookie? How could you let Tina go like that? When word first broke that Spike Lee's next joint would be Red Hook Summer, what caught the eye of many was that the urban neighborhood drama would feature a return of Mookie, the pizza delivery guy Lee embodied so perfectly in his classic 1989 film, Do the Right Thing. While many speculated the film would be a sequel, we quickly learned that wasn't the case, and that Mookie's part would be a small one.
MTV has the first clip from Red Hook Summer, and it's basically an interview between Flick(Jules Brown) and Mookie, catching up with the Brooklyn mainstay on what he's been up to for the last 23 years. Quite a lot, actually, as he reveals things didn't turn out so well between him and Tina(played by the fiery Rosie Perez), but that he's maintained his job at Sal's Pizzeria, even though the last time we saw him he was throwing a garbage can through the window.
It's hard to tell exactly how this scene fits into the narrative, as the story follows Flick as he's forced to leave his Atlanta home and spend the summer in Brooklyn with his Bible thumping grandfather(Clarke Peters). Then again, virtually all of Lee's films reference Do the Right Thing in some way, and this is probably just a means of showing again that all of his movies are interconnected. Still, it's pretty cool.
Red Hook Summer opens on August 10th, and here in Washington DC on August 24th. Check out the clip below....
