3. Trishna
Michael Winterbottom's lovingly shot re-imagining of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'urbanvilles moves the drama from England to India, enriching the story with cultural and social complexities. As the titular heroine, Freida Pinto gives a wonderfully insightful performance that marks her as an actress capable of carrying a film on her shoulders.
2. Beasts of the Southern Wild
Surely at this point you've heard the incredible reviews and ran out to see Beasts of the Southern Wild already. Right? If not, now might be the time to experience the poetic majesty of this film while everybody else is occupied with The Dark Knight Rises.
1. The Dark Knight Rises
Larger than life from the very first frame, Christopher Nolan's sweeping swansong delivers on every level. Indelibly stamping Batman in a way few others have, The Dark Knight Rises is a crowning technical and narrative achievement. The movie experience of the year and the end to one of the best trilogies ever made.

DVD Pick of the Week: Friends with Kids
Somehow people slept on this funny and poignant relationship comedy even though it features half the Bridesmaids cast. That reason alone isn't why you should see it, but there's no denying they and all of Jennifer Westfeldt's talented ensemble have remarkable comedic chemistry. Westfeldt and Adam Scott play two best friends who agree to have a kid together but skip the heavy relationship drama. It doesn't go as planned, but it doesn't quite go as a more typical romantic comedy might, taking a fresh and hilarious perspective that makes this film a winner.
