And man, does The Big Wedding have a large ensemble: You have older heavyweights Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon and Diane Keaton, with De Niro and Keaton playing a divorced couple and Sarandon his new flame. For some Catholic reason somewhat explained in the trailer, De Niro and Keaton have to pretend to still be married at their adopted son Alejandro's (Ben Barnes) wedding to Missy (Amanda Seyfried) because Alejandro's biological mother (who is coming to the nuptials) disapproves of divorce. The hoax becomes exponentially out of control as it grows to involve their other children, Jared (Topher Grace, who I'm OK with being relevant again) and Lyla (Heigl). Upon arriving to their big, opulent lake house (yay, movies about rich white people!) Lyla especially seems to have a poor relationship with her father, so I can imagine she'll be playing the "bitchy condescending one" yet again. What a solid line to add to her resume.
Oh, and Robin Williams also pops up as a ridiculous Catholic priest. Naturally.
The Big Wedding, written and directed by Justin Zackham (who also wrote the Morgan Freeman- and Jack Nicholson-starring The Bucket List) arrives in theaters on Oct. 26, 2012, facing off against Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, the Tyler Perry-starring Alex Cross, and the mega-budgeted Cloud Atlas. I think we all know what our parents will be watching.
