Joss Whedon says 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' TV series is "autonomous" from 'The Avengers' sequel

Well, it didn't take long for more news to drop on ABC's upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series, which they just ordered up a pilot for yesterday. With Joss Whedon reportedly having some involvement in the production as a co-writer along with his brother Jed and Maurisa Tancharoen, the obvious line of thought was that the show would tie-in to the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well...maybe not.

While moderating a Q&A for the Mike Birbiglia comedy, Sleepwalk With Me(review this Friday), Whedon was asked about the show, stating that it would be  "autonomous" from what he's doing with The Avengers 2. The show will follow the top secret espionage organization led by Nick Fury, in what will likely be some sort of superhero crime procedural with bits of Whedon's particular brand of humor. Jed and Tancharoen will be the showrunners, while Joss is co-writing the pilot and may direct if his schedule permits.

Joss has had great success creating cult favorite TV series, but other than Buffy and Angel, not necessarily ones that stay on the air very long. While the show isn't on the the season schedule just yet, S.H.I.E.L.D. obviously has great potential to be a real game-changer for Marvel and Disney in what they can accomplish with it. [Variety]
