Tops at the Box Office: 'The Dark Knight Rises' erases 'Total Recall' for 3rd week at #1

1. The Dark Knight Rises- $36.4M/$354.6M
Clearly, at this point we can figure that The Dark Knight Rises isn't going to match up to The Dark Knight's $1B worldwide haul, nor even the $533M domestic total. That's not to say the film was a failure, because it certainly wasn't, and will still go down as one of the most successful of all-time. After a whopping 60% drop last week, a 41% dip this week is more stabilizing, and edged it out of the herd of newcomers, including the much-hyped remake of Total Recall.

2. Total Recall-$26M
It doesn't pay to try and rip off Arnold Schwarzenegger. Need proof? The (mostly) Schwarzenegger-less Terminator Salvation did bad enough to basically kill the franchise, and last year's Conan the Barbarian struggled to recoup half its $90M production budget. The same goes for the massively expensive Total Recall, sporting a less charismatic Colin Farrell in a film nobody was exactly dying to see get remade. Farrell may just want to avoid remakes as a general rule, as last summer's greatly overlooked Fright Night also landed with a thud.
3. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days- $14.7M
Third time may be the charm, but Fox has always been able to count on the modestly budgeted Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise to perform well beyond expectations. Picked up on the cheap a few years ago, the family friendly series on middle school angst has routinely done well during the early part of the year, and it continues to thrive when thrust into the bloated summer months against stiffer competition. This one opened a bit less than the previous two installments, likely due to the presence of Total Recall and The Dark Knight Rises, but considering it cost roughly $20M and should have a long shelf life, it should do well enough to have Fox thinking of putting poor Greg Heffley through more growing pains.
4. Ice Age: Continental Drift- $8.4M/$131.9M
5. The Watch- $6.35M/$25.4M
How does a movie with Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, and Jonah Hill perform this badly? Quite easily, it seems.
6. Ted- $5.5M/$203.4M
7. Step Up Revolution- $5.3M/$23.1M
8. The Amazing Spider-Man- $4.3M/$250.6M
9.  Brave- $2.9M/$223.3M
10. Magic Mike- $1.38M/$110.9M
