After Andrew Dominik released his moody and atmospheric neo-Western, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, it was clear he was a director who would never take the easy approach. He managed to take that seemingly straight forward film and turn it into a reflection on celebrity and idol worship, and now he seems to have similarly ambitious designs for Killing Them Softly.
On the surface, the film seems to be just another mob flick with a top shelf cast. After a mob-controlled poker game gets robbed by a couple of degenerates, an enforcer played by Brad Pitt is brought in to do whatever's necessary to find the culprits. While that sounds awesome enough, Dominik takes the novel approach of setting the film during the 2008 Presidential election, just as this country's economic crisis was really starting to take hold. The clips we've seen previously, along with this brand spankin' new trailer, show this is really to be a story about desperate men doing whatever they can to survive in the current economic and political climate. I'm sold.
