Sex, humor, religion, and an inspirational human drama all rolled into one? And it's a true story? When I saw The Sessions(then known as The Surrogate) back at Sundance I immediately had it pegged as a film that would be a major player during the late season Oscar talk. As the film nears its release on October 9th, the buzz for stars John Hawkes and Helen Hunt is certainly building on that front, and this newly released clip is a good indicator as to why.
The film stars Hawkes as Mark O'Brien, a 38-year old humorist who has been stricken with polio since childhood. Now living in an iron lung, he sets out to finally lose his virginity with the aid of an adventurous sexual surrogate played by Hunt. William H. Macy plays Mark's forward-thinking priest, and the clip shows the film's sense of humor and poignancy as they discuss why God would punish him with a body that denies him the simplest of pleasures. It's a pivotal scene in the film, and one that informs much of the rest of the story.
The Sessions opens on October 9th. Check out the clip below, and if you're interested in attending a free Washington DC screening of the film tonight, followed by a Q &A with Hawkes, simply go here for the details....
