Between The Ice Storm and Wonder Boys, few come equipped with more dark comedy experience than Tobey Maguire. He just has the perfect, schoolboy gone bad look to him, so whenever we get to see him take on the genre it's always a treat. One of the big acquisitions at Sundance last year was The Details, just such a film which has Maguire starring alongside Elizabeth Banks. It's been sitting on the shelf ever since, probably because it's a tough film to market, but with a release date finally around the corner we've got the first official trailer.
Directed by Jacob Aaron Estes(the vastly underrated Mean Creek), the film has Maguire as a Seattle doctor who is watching his life spiral out of control thanks to...well, "the details". His infidelity has gotten out of hand; his relationship with his wife(Banks) is on the rocks; and he's got some sort of raccoon problem. All of these things threaten to send him over the edge, and by the look of it we might see Maguire get a little violent. Laura Linney and Kerry Washington play a couple of Maguire's mistresses, while Ray Liotta and Dennis Haysbert don't. At least I hope they don't.
Judging by this I can see why The Winstein Company has been holding on to it for so long. It looks great, but not something you'd expect to see do well at the box office. The Details opens in limited release on November 2nd.....
