Although it's flying under the radar right now, there's one major reason why Turbo may be the surprise animated hit of 2013: Robert Siegel. That name probably doesn't mean a whole lot to you, but if you saw The Wrestler and Big Fan, two of the most insightful looks at sports culture...well, ever, then you know how good of a writer he is. Can he bring that same level of intelligence to the story of a talking snail?
The first trailer for Turbo has hit the starting line, and immediately I was pumped to hear 'Tick of the Clock', the pulsing track used so well in Drive last year. You think they don't know it can make anything look awesome? The racing shots are a a little unspectacular, but this is very much a teaser and they may be holding back. We only get a small taste of the humor as Turbo(voiced by Ryan Reynolds) trains to achieve his dream of racing in the Indy 500. Marking the directorial debut of storyboard artist David Soren(Kung Fu Panda), the film features the voices of Michael Pena, Paul Giamatti, Bill Hader, Richard Jenkins, Michelle Rodriguez, Ken Jeong, Jamuel L. Jackson, Snoop Dogg, and Maya Rudolph. Turbo speeds into theaters on July 19th 2013....
