1st official look at Lars Von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'

Anytime Lars von Trier opens his mouth, usually something controversial is about to spill out. But that's just par for the course, considering every film he makes also ends up a hot button topic. Just a couple of years after his stunning end-of-the-world film Melancholia, not to mention his inflammatory Cannes comments which got him barred from the festival, he's now back with his two-part erotic epic, Nymphomaniac.

The first image has been released, and it appears to show star Charlotte Gainsberg's character beaten and abandoned in an alley, leading to her discovery and a recounting of her complicated sexual history through the age of 50. Those hoping the first photo would feature the much-hyped explicit sex scenes will probably be disappointed by how little is happening here, but it's just the start of what's probably going to be a very aggressive marketing push. Von Trier will want to get as much buzz surrounding the film as possible in hopes of getting back into Cannes' good graces.

Starring Shia LaBeouf, Stellan Skarsgard, Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman, Connie Nielsen, Willem Dafoe, and Udo Kier, Nymphomaniac doesn't have a U.S. date yet but may open internationally in May. [Artificial Eye]
