After scoring a surprise hit with his S&M comedy Secretary, which introduced many of us to the greatness of Maggie Gyllenhaal, director Steven Shainberg has been pretty quiet. Sure, he brought us the weird Diane Arbus fantasy/biopic Fur, but nobody saw it and those who did mostly hated it. Now seven years later he's back with The Big Shoe, another comedy that deals with sexual taboos. I think Shainberg's found his niche.
Already set to star Jim Sturgess, the film about a foot-fetishist and talented shoe designer has now added Kristen Stewart and Elizabeth Banks to the cast. They'll play a muse and psychotherapist respectively, hired by his overbearing family to steer him towards mass production. Susan Sarandon had been mentioned for a role before, but it remains unclear if that's still the case.
Filming is set to begin in June. [Variety]
