New trailer for sci-fi film 'Oblivion' with Tom Cruise
So much for that comeback Tom Cruise was making. Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol was supposed to be a career resurgence for the actor, but the two films he's done since have been tremendous flops, with Jack Reacher an especially embarrassing dud. But maybe Cruise will find greater fortunes in the sci-fi genre, in which he has a handful of projects on the way. The first of those is Oblivion, from Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski.
A new trailer for the film has been released, and it has a totally different feel than the last one, which looked a little too much like Wall-E. This one reveals more of the plot than we'd seen previously, laying it out in a clear and concise manner without giving too much of the central mystery. In a future Earth destroyed by alien invasion, forcing the humans to evacuate, Cruise plays a drone repairman who has repeated visions of a mysterious woman. When he discovers that very woman in a crashed escape pod, he begins to learn that everything he ever was taught may have been a lie. Looks like there will be plenty of opportunity for Cruise and co-star Olga Kurylenko to make mid-air escapes, fight off heavily-armed drones, and likely fall in love.
Leading him through the looking glass is Morgan Freeman as *shocker* an all-knowing rebel leader, while Andrea Riseborough is Cruise's wife and Melissa Leo appears to be the "villain". William Monahan and Michael Arndt worked on the script, so there's reason to believe Oblivion is more than just another genre thriller. Will it get Cruise back on track, though? We'll find out when it opens in IMAX on April 12th, then everywhere else on April 19th.
